Today is Father's Day. That day, once a year when we get to honor the men who helped bring us here. Emphasis on the word "men". Here's the thing. I usually have this whole rant about how fathers are just as important as mothers and yet, so many people still give Father's Day to women, as if they didn't have their day last month. So this year, I'll keep it short. My Father's Day wishes are reserved for *gasp!* fathers. I don't care if your momma played mommy, daddy, uncle and grandpa, she had her day last month and she can have all of the seats today. I don't care if you're almost a father and your woman is nine months pregnant. A father is a man who held his woman's hand, wiped the sweat from her brow and breathed with her in the delivery room. A father is a man who picked you up when you fell down and scraped your knee, put a band aid on your booboo, wiped your tears and sent you on your way. A father is a man who taught his sons how to be men and taught his daughters the importance of being a lady. But really, most importantly, a father is a MAN. And there are things a man can teach that a woman never could which is why God intended His children to be raised by both. Now I get it, not everyone was lucky enough to be raised in a home with two parents. And I can appreciate that one parent doing a job meant for two couldn't have been the easiest thing in the world. But I also know that Father's Day is for fathers. I'm not one of those bitter, fatherless women with daddy issues and if you are one such person, just know this: May is gone, much like your father. But unlike your father, it will be back and when that day comes, I will join you in singing the praises of mothers everywhere. But today, the only praises I'll be singing is that of my dad. Because as big of a pain in the ass as he always is, he has always been there. And that is what makes the difference between a father and a dad. Labels: babble and rant, in real life, personals |
