Truth is, I'm not innocent. I'm just an abstinent fireplace that doesn't wanna feel the fire kindled between her legs anymore so don't mind the ashes.   new year, new shenanigans
Monday, February 1, 2016 || 7:39 AM
It's been a while since I've done this. For whatever reason, the beginning of the year always sucks for me. So come February, I usually try to hit the reset button and start over. It hasn't all been sucky, though. Last week, there was this crazy ass blizzard that took over NYC. You know, in case you missed it. But before that, my friend Joel and I went on what I am sure is the first of many random shenanigans in 2016.
During the month of January, There was an art exhibit in the Knockdown Center called Suspended Forest. Aptly named, as it is a forest that hangs from the ceiling and consisting of discarded Christmas trees. I thought it was a pretty dope concept so I called the only person I know who is always down for whatever random ideas I come up with and dragged him out there to see what it was all about. And let me just say, my pictures do not do it justice.

 Joel, lurking

I feel like I didn't really capture the full beauty of it but it was more than just a room full of old Christmas trees. It's hard to explain. I think, for me, it highlighted the beauty in death. Death is something that has touched my life and touched it often in recent years. Just last week, I lost someone who was like an aunt to me and I'm not gonna lie; losing someone in a way so final is the hardest thing I've ever done. But walking through that room was an entirely different perspective on death. A hanging forest is cool, sure. But imagine walking on a concrete floor covered in pine needles with their fragrance surrounding you. The closer the tree gets to dying, the more it dries out, the more beautiful it becomes. And even though you're sad to see it go, you enjoyed it while it lasted. Maybe it's just me, but it definitely gave me something to think about.
Last year was a weird one for me. I'm not entirely sure that's a bad thing but it was different, for sure. There were things I experienced, old friends that became new again and vice versa. It was a very reflective year for me and I'm just hoping that I can take what I've learned and put it into making 2016 awesome. I hope that everyone had an awesome holiday (even though I'm a whole month late) but more importantly, I hope you're all having an amazing new year.

I remember a simpler time, when my makeup collection consisted of a chapstick in my back pocket. Those were the days....
After years of fighting it, I have a makeup "collection" (I'm using that word very loosely).

What's more, it slightly resembles that of a grown woman. Which I'm actually kinda proud of. So I figured I'd tell you all what's in this collection/my makeup routine (and by "routine" I mean what I use the once-ish a month that I actually wear makeup) because even though I'm not about to do a Youtube tutorial or a "what's in my makeup drawer" video, people are into this stuff. Right? RIGHT?? Anyway....

Stuff in this "collection":
EYES
Urban Decay Book of Shadows 4
-includes 16 shadows, liquid eyeliner, mascara and the eyeshadow primer potion
BH Cosmetics 120 color palette
Estee Lauder Deluxe Eyeshadow Compact
Clinique all about shadow quad
Clinique lash building primer
Clinique lash doubling mascara
Clinique high impact mascara
Clinique quickliner (cream)
-intense ebony, intense plum and intense ivy
Benefit They're Real mascara
Givenchy Phenomen' Eyes mascara
Estee Lauder Intense Kajal eyeliner in Blackened Black (pencil)
Sephora retractable eyeliner  in shimmer bronze (crayon)
Sephora Classic Line 24hr felt liner (liquid)
Kiko automatic precision eyeliner in 705/blue-ish (crayon)
LIPS
Maybelline Baby Lips (that time chapstick almost made a comeback)
-plum, pink and nude
Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Unapologetic
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fleshtone
Makeover Essentials lip gloss
-coral, bright pink, soft pink and champagne
Kiko matte precision lip pencil in 306/bright red
Kat Von D Everlasting Love Liquid Lipstick in Berlin
Buxom Full-On Lipstick in Las Vegas
Bare Minerals Pretty Amazing Lipstick in Strength
BH Cosmetics Color Lock Long Lasting Matte Lipstick in Passionate
Sephora Cream Lip Stain
-Always Red, Endless Purple, Forever Fuchsia and Mandarin Muse
MAC Lipstick
-Cyber (satin), Diva (matte)
Clinique Chubby Stick intense moisturizing lip color balm
-Mightiest Maraschino, Broadest Berry
Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella
Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien
FACE
Bare Minerals Prime Time foundation primer
Bare Minerals Original Foundation in Warm Tan
Bare Minerals All-Over Face Color in Warmth
Bare Minerals Original Mineral Vail
Estee Lauder Deluxe All-Over Face Compact
-includes three blush shades and a bronzer
Makeover Essentials Shimmer Powder Brush in Bronze
Benefit Watt's Up Highlighter
Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream in Deep
Chanel Powderlights in Rose Dusk

tl;dr I have a lot of shit. So now, onto my "routine"

Foundation intimidates me. Which is why I use the Clinique CC Cream because I don't need a primer, a moisturizer or even a brush. I just rub it all over my face and it's everything in one. I don't even need a concealer because it blurs everything. What I love about it is that it's super subtle. It doesn't look or feel like I'm wearing makeup but it's like putting a very subtle filter on your face.
Eyeshadow is my favorite because even though I don't wear it often, there's so much you can do with it. Urban Decay has some really great, super pigmented colors but I've really been loving the BH Cosmetics 120 palette lately because there are so many color combos and looks you can create. I'm pretty hopeless with eyeliner but once I put on mascara, it's a little easier to make a straight line. I usually use the Clinique liners because they're the easiest and they don't smudge.
Lipstick is kind of an obsession of mine because even if I don't do anything else to my face, I can always put a color on my lips and look like I tried.
This is probably the laziest lazy girl makeup routine you've ever heard of. That's fine. I've always felt like I'm not girly enough to put in more effort than I do. It's a miracle I've even gotten this far. I've accepted it though. God blessed me with really good looks so it's all good. I saw this woman putting on her makeup on the train the other day and wanted to give her a round of applause. I can barely get mascara on in my bright ass bathroom without smudging some on my nose. So for the women who do  put in the effort, especially the ones who don't need to because God also blessed you with extremely good looks, I salute you.

Yesterday, I posted the following series of clips to my Snap Story.

Now, I realize that I really don't owe anyone an explanation but I'm usually not so down on social media because one, people don't like to see that shit and two, I normally like to keep these things to myself and pretend that my life is perfect for social media. You know, like everyone else. But everyone has these days where shit gets to be too much. Last Friday, I came home feeling this way. Like I was so down and frustrated and I felt so stuck because I didn't know what to do with these feelings and it was all so exhausting, I just wanted to sleep until further notice. I didn't really know when "further notice" was, exactly. I just knew I didn't want to be awake and I didn't want to deal with the way I felt. Now the thought of suicide has never crossed my mind except when I briefly wondered if this is the way that people who are actually suicidal feel. Because I wanted to sleep. Not indefinitely, of course, but shit just got to be too much. Now that I think about it, I could be wrong but I doubt that that's how it feels to be suicidal. Disclaimer: if you are someone who is actually suicidal or have ever had any thoughts along those lines, please talk to someone. I promise it's not that's bad. I promise things will get better if you give God a chance to really work in your life. Trust Him. And talk to someone. Life gets hard sometimes but it always gets better.
So I posted this to my Snap Story because after feeling this way on Friday and then having an asshole ruin my Saturday and frustrate me further, I was pretty much over it. But then on Memorial Day, I found out that someone I grew up with passed away in a really screwed up way and I just couldn't take any more. I felt like talking to someone about how I was feeling but I also didn't want to talk to anyone about anything. So I did the next best thing. I talked to Snapchat.
Here's the thing: it was the most random ass people who had something to say about this. And really, it's Snapchat, it does't require a response. Which means it was just extra for the sake of being extra. So I will say this one more time, because it's really not the first time I've said it but it needs repeating. If you are someone who has a problem with the things I post on my social media, or even on this blog, please unfollow me. Unfriend me, block me, do whatever it is you need to do to never see my shit again. Because the first amendment says that I can say whatever the fuck I want. I'm paraphrasing, but that's the gist of it. So the one thing you can't do is silence me. If I'm sad, I'm gonna be sad. If I'm upset or frustrated or ridiculously, deliriously happy, if I want to, I'm gonna say that and if I don't, I won't. The point is, all you can do is choose to look or choose not to look. So if you don't like it, GO AWAY. I promise I won't be mad. Stop lurking. Stop creeping. Just stop.

  The new ethnic fatigue
Friday, May 1, 2015 || 9:09 PM
I have no idea of the details of the Freddie Gray situation and I have no intention of finding them out. The only thing I know is what I've gathered from social media and what I found out was enough to let me know that I didn't want to know any more. I am tired. Because really, this is just the same old story with a few varying details. And not even just in America but especially in Baltimore. I am so tired of this particular brand of injustice. Tired of seeing black people out in the streets protesting or rioting or looting or whatever it is they feel they need to do to express their grief over being treated as if their lives mean nothing. I'm tired of the arguments we have amongst ourselves, placing blame, more often than not where it doesn't belong. I'm tired of marching and chanting with no results, no change. But most of all, I'm tired of the endless list of names. Those people whose names and memory are often tainted to make a case for their murderer when they're no longer here to defend themselves. I can't remember them all, only a detail here or there. A man killed on his wedding day. Arizona and skittles and hoodies. A whisper: "I can't breathe." We've been drowning in this long list of names. Of course that false sense of security comes, the idea that maybe things are getting better, maybe we're making progress. And then they pull the rug out from under us. Another name is added to the list and we find ourselves drowning once more. "I can't breath."
So what's the point of learning these new details of the same story? Chances are, I already know how it ends. I'm over it. Because it's too much. Because I can't breath. Because I. Am. Tired.

  the life of a writer
Thursday, February 26, 2015 || 10:32 PM
"I am a writer. If there is any left over, then I'll be a woman." -Alysia Harris
I was just thinking that I need a writing desk so that I'll finally have a proper place to procrastinate and eat chocolate do all of my writing.
Do you know what it's like being a writer? Imagine the way Neo sees the matrix. It's all scrolling green zeros and ones, right? Ok so it's basically like that but instead of numbers, you see the world in spell check. I'm not even kidding. So then your friends (the ones who can still talk to you because, bless them, they love you in spite of your constant corrections) look to you as their lifelong dictionary/thesaurus. So you get a lot of "how do you spell *blank*? Oh, I thought so, I just wanted to make sure" or "...what's the word I'm looking for...? No, not that but it has a similar meaning." And everything you read (especially other peoples posts on social media), you secretly edit because most of the people you know have spent at least thirteen years in school and at most twenty-five, and STILL don't know the difference between there, their and they're.
And that's only how it affects other people. Imagine turning that on yourself. They say that you are your worst critic. I think that's especially true of people who create. Whether it's poetry or prose, photography or paintings, every form of artist has critics but none more harsh than themselves. As a writer, you will write a million drafts of the same thing and feel that each one was worse than the last. And because writer's block is actually Satan, he will convince you that you need to write about the stupidest things because it's better than nothing. Also, writers generally love to read so they'll spend a lot of time reading some of the most amazing work and think to themselves, "I am a literary duck."
Honestly, I don't know. Maybe this is all writers. Maybe not. It definitely applies to this writer though. I often think about how J. K. Rowling was so freaking brilliant because she created this whole new world and not only made people believe it but made people want to be a part of it so bad that I'm still waiting for my Hogwarts letter. But then she went beyond that. She created Luna Lovegood, this quirky weirdo who believed in some completely, ridiculously impossible things, thereby creating make believe within her world of make believe. I can hardly wrap my mind around the genius of it. And of course she wasn't always what she is now. And I'm sure there were days when things really sucked for her and she probably thought to herself "this is stupid, nobody's gonna want to read a book about a wizard going to school. Teenagers hate school! And then there's this weird girl...what the hell is a wrackspurt anyway? I should stop." But I'm glad she didn't. As much as it kinda sucks to be a writer at times, it's so fulfilling and deeply rewarding to those who are truly passionate about it. And I'm guessing it'll be a loooooong time before I pen my own Harry Potter but it's cool. Writing has always been my favorite form of self expression and writing for a bunch of randos on the internet is good enough for me.

  something different
Wednesday, February 18, 2015 || 8:51 PM
This week, I did something that I haven't done in a long time. I filmed, edited and posted a video. And through doing all of that, all I could think was how I don't remember video editing being so tedious. Dah welp. Here it is, anyways:

Sidebar: I was looking at that picture of the dementor baking a pie...

His apron says "kiss the cook"
I cannot stop laughing

If you're as big of a Harry Potter nerd as I am, you'll know why that's so hilarious. Also, in case you were wondering, I found this picture on Tumblr where some disgruntled Potterhead wanted to know who makes the food in Azkaban if there are only dementors and prisoners there. Tumblr is clearly the greatest place on the internet, probably only second to Twitter. If you're interested in following me on either of those places and subscribing to my YouTube channel (which should be a bit more consistent than it has been), click the links on the navigation above. Love, peace and Patronus Pie.
...I am cracking myself up over here. Patronus Pie.
Side sidebar: what if someone's Patronus was actually a pie, and instead of making a dementor retreat, it just distracted him and he kept trying to eat it while you escaped? I am literally the biggest nerd I know. I'll stop writing now.

  Uptown Funk
Wednesday, February 4, 2015 || 10:32 PM
Before: I thought Bruno Mars was relatively handsome and pretty talented. I wasn't a stan. I was barely a fan. I have to be in a certain mood for his music but I do enjoy it. I actually have both of his albums, so there's that.

After: I want to have this man's children. Like, no joke. That purple blazer and those rollers just do it for me and I cannot, for the life of me, explain why.

Uptown Funked me up.

  A hairy situation
Friday, January 9, 2015 || 2:55 PM
Since my first post of the year was relatively gloomy, I've decided to lighten the mood a bit. Sorry about the misery, guys. It happens to the best of us. So to make up for it, I'm going to divulge the secrets of something that everyone always asks me about: my hair. Please, do try and contain your excitement.
For as long as I can remember, I have, for the most part, worn my hair the same way. It's been relaxed since I was about thirteen and since then, I've just worn it straight, with a part right down the middle. Occasionally, I'd get a little crazy and part it on the side instead of the middle. But honestly, that's as far as any changes in my hair ever went. And to this day, I still wash every 3-4 weeks, perm every 3-4 months and wrap it with a little olive oil spray every night. The growth has been incredible.

I've gotten a bit more carefree with the styling these days though. Instead of meticulously parting my hair every morning, I just run my fingers through it and push it all back. So in the past two or three years, I've been experimenting a bit more with protective styles. I really like them because even though I'm not natural, a protective style gives me the opportunity to completely change up my look and my hair grows like crazy whenever I do one. The most recent ones I've tried are Havana twists, super jumbo Poetic Justice box braids, a sew-in weave and crochet braids, which I currently have in. My two favorites have been the Poetic Justice braids and the crochet braids, for very different reasons, but I'll get to that.

These are the Poetic Justice braids. I love them because they're super long, relatively big (for box braids) and extremely versatile. It's also ideal for summer because you have basically full access to your scalp and its a pretty low maintenance style. I didn't have to do anything to it. BUT I did a whole helluva lot with it because it was so fun to style.

My second favorite has been the crochet braids. In my experience, it hasn't been very versatile at all but I love it because there's absolutely no leave out and it still looks so natural. My friend who crocheted it for me gave me a middle part and two side parts so I can sort of flip it any which way I want but that's as far as the versatility goes. It's perfect for me this winter though because it keeps my head so warm (mine is on the longer side) but again, unlike with a sew-in, I still have acces to my scalp.

The other thing I love about this is that the longer you have it in, the bigger it gets. Not huge and unmanageable but the curls get a bit looser and softer and it looks so pretty. I've never gotten more complements on a hairstyle before, which surprised me because up until I had this installed, I really didn't think I could pull off big hair.
Next would be the sew-in. And while it looks really pretty, especially because my hair can usually blend flawlessly with a nice Brazilian remy, I really like being able to see/feel/itch my scalp whenever I want to and it's just not possible with a sew-in. Which is why (for those of you who are blissfully unaware) you often see women beating themselves over the head. It's because they can't itch their scalps.

Nonetheless, other than that small complaint, it is very pretty and when I get it done, I usually have a lot of leave out so I can part it any way I like and put it in a ponytail or pig tails or whatever I feel like at the moment. It's as versatile as my real hair which is funny because whenever I have a sew-in, people think it is my real hair, as opposed to when I wear my real hair, I.E. the following...

...perfect strangers approach me in the street to find out what kind of hair is in my head. I'm always tempted to tell them it's a really nice Grenadian remy but...*shrug*
Last but not least would be the Havana twists. I really like them because before those faux dreads were a thing (also, the next style I'm trying out), it was sort of the closest I would get to being a dread head. I've been flirting with he idea of actually going dread for the longest but I still don't think I'm brave enough to do it. It seems so permanent. So Havana twists were the next best thing. And they were really cute.

So that's my hair story, thus far. Hopefully, it didn't bore you to tears. As for the lovely people responsible for making these hairstyles possible, I only let three people near this head: my sister Wanda, my best friend Casandra and a lovely Dominican woman named Viviana. Honorable mention to those ladies, they are the shit. If you're interested in more posts like this one, I'll be sure to document the next protective style I try. Happy styling, ladies!

  the other r&r
Friday, January 2, 2015 || 4:31 PM
I've given up hope of getting rest and relaxation. 2014 was trash. There's no other way to put it. This last week alone was particularly shitty. So instead, I've decided to review and reevaluate. Because I cannot have another year like 2014. It was the first year of my entire life that I hadn't worked or gone to school all year. The first year that my illness had gotten so bad that I couldn't be a normally functioning person. I was looking through my Instagram feed the other day and it looked like I had the time of my life in 2014 (which goes to show that life is never as good as it looks under the best Instagram filters). I was jealous of that girl I saw in the pictures, with her friends and all her good times. Don't get me wrong, I love my friends and I deeply cherish all of the good times we have together. But when there is a deep sadness within you, the bad times are always easier to remember than the good.
As the year came to a head and 2015 loomed closer and closer, things got worse. This past Monday was the fifth anniversary of my brother's death. Add that to a "best friend" who's all about self and a family who just doesn't get it and I can only chalk it up to God's unfailing mercy that I haven't completely fallen apart. That doesn't mean I haven't felt like I was at times.
This New Years was also trash. And for a while there, in my deeply depressed state of mind, I resolved myself to thinking that this one day was a preview of the year to come and that things would just suck forever. On New Years Eve, I had to walk out on a situation that was greatly contributing to my madness and I still haven't found a solution to that problem. Then I had to witness my dearest friend try to deal with the current situation that's greatly contributing to her madness. It wasn't easy. The only thing worse than feeling yourself fall apart and trying with everything in you to hold it together is watching someone you love be in that very same position. Needless to say, I rang in the new year in tears and they didn't end at midnight. On New Years Day, I went out to run an errand and my walk home got increasingly sad the closer I got. It's a horrible feeling, to feel like you want to go home but you're already there. It sucks to feel like there isn't a soul on this Earth who cares and the only person who did is dead. At every intersection, I found myself wishing that the cars would keep coming as I crossed the street. I put on the biggest, darkest sunglasses I own and cried the whole way home and things inside my head got really dark. But as the day went on, things slowly got better as they tend to do when it seems least likely. My sister in-law came over with a big cup of cremas and assured me that I was not alone in my sadness this week. Then I spoke to my sister and she was able to put things into perspective as she always does, and somehow, talking to the few people who are closest to me gave me just enough hope for the new year.
This week, my mother said probably the most profound thing I've ever heard her say: "Life is what you make it." It's such a cliche saying but coming from my old-school West Indian mother, I finally took it in the most literal sense. There are some things I will never be able to change, like the fact that I'm sick, that my brother is gone and I definitely can't change the actions of others. But for this new year, my only resolution is just a simple promise to myself to celebrate the good, not dwell on the bad and make life better to the best of my ability, not just for me but for everyone around me. And to my friends, I hope that in the time that I have known you, I have made your life better because as bad as things are for me at times, you have made my life better. I wish you all a happy and prosperous new year and I hope you all make it a great one.

  #NYCC 2014
Monday, November 3, 2014 || 6:43 PM
Let me just start this by saying that New York Comic Con was AWESOME. I realize this is coming about a month late but given the fact that I was quite ill (no, not ebola) and then had a tooth ripped out of my mouth, I'm hoping you'll just forgive me and get over it. Comic Con was amazing. I say this having only gone for one day and wandered aimlessly around the floor. So imagine having four day passes and actually attending the panel discussions. I realize that only the truly nerdy at heart will understand my enthusiasm and that's okay. But being immersed in the cosplay and the art and video games and books and COMICS...it was like being in an entirely different world. I'll stop rambling now and get on with the pictures.

These were our day passes. We got 44 free digital comics when we registered online with them. There were actually a bunch really good ones.

Joel and I, with the Black Sails skeleton

Chun-Li

Luigi and Mario

I found Waldo!!

Sitting in Bumblebee

The exhibition floor

An actual Sim

Black Widow, Batman, Wonder Woman and Poison Ivy

Joel finally met his hero

Hangin' with Tara McPherson from The Cotton Candy Machine

Tails

...and Dr. Robotnic

So there you have it. The costumes were really amazing and detailed. I also saw Avatar Kiyoshi, Master Roshi and Goku, and a few other notable characters but I wasn't fast enough with my camera. It's all good though. I'm hoping I'll make it back next year and actually be able to get into everything. But I am happy I finally made it to Comic Con. Definitely an unforgettable experience.

  the fault in ourselves

"Some infinities are bigger than other infinities" -John Green
Today, for the first time in a long time (longer than I'd like to admit), I woke up this morning and I didn't open my laptop and check Facebook. I didn't pick up my phone and scroll through Twitter or Instagram. Good morning texts went unanswered, emails unopened. This morning, I woke up and just read. I read all day, only stopping to make (and by make, I mean toast) two very delicious waffles in the late morning.
Yesterday, while wandering through Target buying things I don't need, I picked up The Fault in Our Stars. Admittedly, I'm late and the bandwagon is probably already past capacity but I'll feel free to hop on anyway. I haven't seen the movie because I've been waiting to read the book, telling myself I'd get to it eventually (much like I never got to reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower before I finally just gave in and watched the movie). I am so happy that I decided to wander aimlessly through Target yesterday. I have a lot to say about this book. But first, some background.
The first John Green book that I read was An Abundance of Katherines. I picked it up randomly in the library one day because the cover caught my eye and it seemed like an interesting read. I never recognized the author as someone I'd heard of elsewhere, just another name on one of the many books I picked up at the library. Years later, while browsing YouTube, I stumbled onto the Vlog Brothers and watching them, I felt a certain familiarity. Maybe it's because I am the biggest nerd I know but I'm also infinitely cooler than most. I subscribed to them, never making the connection between one half of the Vlog Brothers and that really good book I'd read some time ago. The first time I'd heard about The Fault in Our Stars, it was from one of my favorite YouTubers. She'd also mentioned Looking for Alaska and I'd made a note of the two titles, telling myself I would read them. Eventually. I still hadn't made the connection. And even after all of the excitement over the movie, I still didn't get it. Not until yesterday when I picked up that book, turned it around and saw the author's picture on the back cover, saw the list of his other titles. That's when I knew, I had to buy it. Also, Target is a trap so I probably would've bought it anyway.
I have a lot of feels about this book. All of the typical "this book is so amazing" feels are obviously present but it's more than that. Being someone with an illness that is incurable but not terminal, I can understand the characters better than I'd like. The pity that they hate, the struggle of having a shit nurse in the ER, feeling like a burden to your family. At one time or another, I have felt all of those things. Of course, it's not as severe as Cancer. I would never compare my pain to those who are "fighting the battle" but calling a 10 a 9? I've been there.
I think, more than identifying with the characters to an extent, the reason that I enjoyed this book so much is because it took me back to a previous version of myself. The version who wasn't always glued to some electronic device, who could spend days unplugged, with her nose buried in a book. The version of myself who laid out on the living room floor all day with nothing but a bottle of water and read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in it's entirety. It was nice to go back to that place today. To sink into myself and go to a place where the characters jump off of the page and into your life was bliss. I laughed with them. I cried with them. And that's the kind of writing I've been missing since Mr. Potter defeated the Dark Lord. I've missed days like this. And I've missed books like this. So I must thank John Green, the man whose dots I couldn't connect until now. I look forward to reading more of his work. I look forward to more days like this.

  diy thread wrapped headphones
Thursday, November 7, 2013 || 9:33 PM
Hi y'all. You guys know I love me a good DIY right? I totally blame this macbook. I used to lay in bed at night and have cool ideas and be too lazy to get up and research them on my desktop and then forget all about it in the morning. Now I have cool ideas AND Google, Etsy and Ebay at my fingertips smh. So here's another DIY, brought to you by my macbook and my insomnia.

DIY Thread Wrapped Headphones

What you'll need:

headphones (duh)
thread and/or yarn
scissors

So this was relatively easy. If you're familiar with lanyard patterns or friendship bracelets or anything of the sort, it'll be a cake walk. You're really just doing a lanyard pattern around the headphones. Most people use embroidery thread but you can also use sock yarn which is what I used on mine.

I bought my yarn from Michaels but you can also find them on Etsy or any local sewing/knitting supply store. I used a self-patterning sock yarn so that the yarn would change colors as I wrapped my headphones but there are plenty of options if you only want one color. When I finished, this is what they looked like:

What I love about these is that they're super cute and they don't tangle anymore which is a plus. I was gonna do a full tutorial but it really is super simple. Plus, Jesus died so Google could live. I just thought it would be a fun little project to spruce up my headphones. I also ended up doing two others in embroidery thread for my friends. Here's what they looked like:

So there you guys have it. Super fun and super easy. Let me know if you guys try this, if you like it or if you hate it. And thanks to my random insomnia, I already have my next three DIY projects lined up so look out for those too. Deux dwet!

  sexyback
Thursday, October 17, 2013 || 10:53 AM
I swear my God is so real. I've been feeling so incredibly uninspired lately. I don't write, I don't cook or bake, I barely ever take pictures, pretty much gave up on crafts, I've just felt stuck. As a result, I've been feeling this depression creeping up on me. The fact that I haven't been feeling well for the last few weeks has probably contributed to that but I honestly feel it's been coming on for some time. There's only one person who knows this because he's the only person who has reason to pay that close attention. And because I'm good at hiding things like this from even my closest friends, I can't really talk to them about it. They have their own shit to deal with, I don't need to add my shit to it too. Finally, last night, it really hit me. So I called the one person I could talk to about it and complained about what I called my "quarterlife crisis" and ranted about how uninspired I felt and how I just needed to get my sexy back. This is probably the nerdiest thing about me but I attribute my sexy to my life having purpose, not actually to the way I look. Because really, have you seen this face?? Anywhoo, after me ranting for quite some time (even my rant was lackluster) and him assuring me that I'm still sexy and I just needed to regroup and find some inspiration and even offering to be my muse (to which I had a hearty laugh), he said he would pray for me. I thanked him. And then we went to bed. When I woke this morning, again feeling like crap, I checked my email. And wouldn't you know it, I had two different (but both awesome) opportunities in my inbox. Because not only is my God real, He's a showoff. And somehow, I feel like He's just getting warmed up. I wanted to sit here and thank Him a million times. Because look how God can just show off in your life and UOENO!

  DIY spiked cutoffs
Sunday, August 18, 2013 || 1:37 PM
During my vacation, the technology gods did not smile down on me. We were supposed to get our wifi hooked up my first week there but it never happened. So I didn't have wifi for the entire three weeks, which suited me just fine. But that means that whatever downtime I did have, I used to work on my DIY projects. So in addition to acid wash shorts, this also happened:

High Waisted Spiked Shorts

What you'll need:

high waisted jeans
scissors
sharp edged tweezer -or- knitting needle
screw-on spikes

First, cut the jeans to your preferred length. This was yet another pair of jeans that had ripped in the inner thigh so I just cut them right where they ripped which, conveniently enough, was the perfect length for me.

Next, use your tweezer or knitting needle to make a small hole in the denim. Try to move the threads of denim aside instead of ripping right through them so that the holes don't get bigger with each wash.

Insert the screw back of the spike into the hole you made from the inside of the jeans...

And screw on the top of the spike. Place as many as you want on the shorts. When I was finished, mine looked like this:

I used 10mm silver cone spikes that I got from this cool little Etsy shop (big surprise). They have so many other shapes, sizes and colors though and they were really great. Also, there are dozens of other Etsy shops that sell spikes and studs and all that good stuff.
This was a relatively easy project and when I was done, I had another cute pair of shorts to wear on vacation. Let me know what you guys think, if you liked it or if you tried it and if you have some cool DIY ideas of your own, feel free to share. I'm always down to try my hand at something new. Hope you guys enjoyed.
